Get your kids’ creative engines started! Unpack the art supplies, unbuckle imaginations, and kickstart the freewheeling designs of what your kids think cars should look like in the future. Then, enter their hand-drawn, painted, or digital artworks in the 2023 Toyota Dream Car USA Youth Art Contest. Artwork submissions created by youth, ages 4-15, are accepted online or by mail from October 1, 2022, through January 31, 2023.

It’s easy to enter. Kids create an original drawing by hand using digital tools, crayons, color pencils, ink pens, markers, or paint (acrylic or watercolor). With the assistance of an adult, they complete an entry form, which is submitted with the drawing (the original, if sent by mail; an image, if using the online form).

Artwork Judging Criteria

Judged on uniqueness, artistry, and execution of concept, artworks are reviewed by age group:

  • Category 1 (4-7 years)
  • Category 2 (8-11 years)
  • Category 3 (12-15 years)

Prize Details

The top three winners in each age group receive awards (gold, silver, and bronze) with cash prizes. Two additional awards are presented each year by the panel of national judges: the Hot Wheels Design Award for an artwork with a design that celebrates the spirit of Hot Wheels® and the Petersen Prestige Award for an artwork that envisions the automotive world in a new and exciting way.

The Hot Wheels Design Award was established in 2022 by one of the contest’s national judges, Bryan Benedict, design director of Hot Wheels and Matchbox Die-Cast, Mattel, Inc. Last year’s recipient was 14-year-old Danica Lilly Ball of Chicora, Pennsylvania for her anime-themed “Steer Clear and Steam Forward into the Future,” an intricate drawing on paper inspired by the endangered Bengal tiger.

Created in 2021, the 2nd annual Petersen Prestige Award was presented last year by the Petersen Automotive Museum to 15-year-old Kaitlyn Chen of Medina, Washington for her digitally drawn “Building Blocks” artwork. one of the nine contest winners, which includes a display of the winning artwork at the museum. The 2021 recipient was Jery Chen for her “Fly Higher with Toyota” artwork
